INFORMATION FOR FAMILY MEMBERS

If you or a loved one is experiencing acute or persistent pain, you have probably seen the affect it can have on your entire family unit. Many people with acute or persistent pain report interference with work, daily activities, sleep, and sexual intimacy. Quality of life can often deteriorate, irritability can develop, and this can hurt relationships with family members and friends.

You do not have to feel alone. If you are working with a medical interdisciplinary team, ask your nurse, social worker or clergy for assistance. Often, there are support groups or informative brochures to help you and your loved ones during this process. Included in this page are some resources that provide very helpful information for family and caregivers.

From the Beth Israel Medical Center
Department of Pain and Palliative Care:

A "family caregiver" is anyone who provides any type of physical and/or emotional care for an ill or disabled loved one at home. Sometimes, "family" is whoever shows up to help. This site is provided to help you obtain information about caregiving, recognize when you need help, ask for and accept assistance from others, and take care of yourself.
